WAYS OF GIVING
You can ensure a strong future for the East Jackson High School Band!
As the East Jackson Eagle Band gets established, its success and fund support is needed throughout the life of the school's existence. The goal for any band is live beyond its founding and inaugural roots. We hope the Eagle Band will grow and flourish to represent the Jackson County Schools on a local, state, national and international platform. Finding creative ways to get the kids to the top level comes from the commitment of local investors. I would like to introduce ways you can support the East Jackson Band for a longtime.
The following information will help you decide what form your payment will most help the East Jackson Band while being most advantageous to your individual circumstances. While tax consideration is the primary concern in giving, it is only common sense for donors to take advantage of the many ways to contribute for a tax deductible benefit. Generally, the following deductions are rewarded annually with the Internal Revenue Services.
CASH CONTRIBUTIONS
Cash contributions allow the entire donor to deduct the amount of the gift for income tax purposes, up to 50 percent of adjusted gross income. Such gifts qualify for the 5-year carryover deduction if they exceed the ceiling in any one year.
CHARITABLE TRUSTS
Charitable Trusts can be an important part of an estate plan. They provide an excellent method diversifying an estate, reducing income tax, reducing gift and estate taxes, minimizing probate costs, and still being able to transfer wealth to heirs. A Charitable Remainder Trust is a deferred gift where the income or the other benefits from the donations are retained by the donor or other beneficiary as long as they live. There are important differences among Charitable Remainder Trusts, but in general they provide that the assets become the property of the Band, while the earnings of benefits from these assets are retained by the donor and/or designated beneficiaries during their lifetimes. A Charitable Lead Trust is a gift where the incomes or other benefits from the donation are given to the Band while the donor is living. Upon death, the remaining assets pass on to designated beneficiaries of the trust.
LIFE INSURANCE
Gifts of life insurance may generally be made to the general band fund campaign. When a full paid-up policy is given, the donor's deduction is measured by the replacement cost. If the policy is not paid, the donor's deduction is approximately the cash surrender value of the policy. Donors may also purchase a policy with the Band as the owner and sole beneficiary. All premiums paid by the donor would be tax deductible and proceeds would not be subject to estate taxes. Through this method, a sizable contribution may be made at relatively low cost to the donor.
BEQUESTS
A person may leave cash, securities, and real estate by will to the Band. The value of such legacy is deductible from the estate of the donor. A person may also establish an Annuity Trust, Unitrust, or Lead Trust by will and obtain estate tax advantages. It is, however, more advantageous to make these types of gifts during one's lifetime, since an income tax deduction is available during the year such a gift is established.
