Jackson County Schools has carefully evaluated the quality of student transportation services. In an effort to continually improve in all areas of the school system, several plans were considered to: reduce student route times, eliminate elementary students from riding with middle and high school students, to create a consistent morning and afternoon driver for all students and to reduce the conflict between afternoon extra-curricular events and valuable instructional time. Each plan was also evaluated to determine budget impact. Presently Jackson County Schools spends approximately $3,000,000 for student transportation, while receiving less than $900,000 from state funding.
After careful consideration of thoughtful stakeholder feedback, the Transportation Department has formulated a fourth option to address and mitigate concerns. Please see the below information regarding Plan #4.
School Day –
Elementary – 7:30 – 2:00
Middle – 8:15 – 3:30
High – 8:00 – 3:15
Benefits – Shortens route times, Consistent driver for students AM and PM route, Express bus availability, similar to existing plan
Challenges – Earlier start/release time for elementary school students, Increase staffing, difficulty recruiting/hiring enough drivers
Staffing - 90 drivers
Costs – $1,600,000

At the April 13th Board Meeting there was lengthy discussion regarding the conversion of the West Jackson Primary School Facility to a middle school. Two options were presented to those in attendance. The first option included a renovation and modification of the existing building with a phased two-story addition. The second option was to completely demo the existing structure and build a three story middle school on-site. The second option became a consideration due to the potential costs being relatively close in both instances. In addition, the pros and cons were discussed at length.
Please see the attached presentation outlining some of the information that was presented at the April 13th, Board Meeting.
