Hour of Code
December 8-14 is Computer Science Week and in celebration of that many SJES students (K-5) will be taking part in an Hour of Code. Last year 15 million students worldwide learned an Hour of Code. Students can also participate in Hour of Code at home by accessing the tutorials linked to our SJES Student Links Page (http://sjesbookmarks.weebly.com/).
The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. There are a variety of tutorials available for the Hour of Code and they are all self-guided and allow students to work at their own pace. By participating in an Hour of Code, students get a glimpse at what computer science is all about. Computer programming jobs are growing at 2x the national average and it is predicted that by 2020, there will be 1,000,000 more computing jobs than students majoring in computer science. Coding not only develops computer science skills, but also a number of other important skills such as critical thinking and problem solving.
