Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week is October 27-31. The purpose of this week is to take a stand against drugs. The theme for this year is: Love Yourself, Be Drug Free. In honor of Red Ribbon week, we will have various dress up days.
Monday, October 27 - This is our Red Ribbon kick off. Wear as much red as you can to celebrate Enrique Camarena and his fight against drugs.
Tuesday, October 28 - We are dreaming of a drug free future. Wear your pajamas.
Wednesday, October 29 - Give drugs the boot and wear your favorite western gear!
Thursday, October 30 - We are wild about being drug free! Wear animal print or camouflage.
Friday, October 31 - Show your character and say NO to drugs! Dress up as your favorite character.
JCSS Special Olympics Winter 2014 Shirts
Jackson County Special Olympics Winter 2014 shirts and hooded cotton full zip jackets are on sale! The shirts will have a Special Olympics logo embroidered on one side and can be personalized on the other side for only $2 more. Jackets are grey with Special Olympics colors or red lettering and teal logo. Shirts are $16 and jackets are $28.
Orders are due by November 3rd.

Ms. Mingo Is Invited to Attend the White House Convening School Counseling Task Force
We are delighted to announce that Taryne Mingo, the school counselor at South Jackson Elementary, has been invited by the Office of the First Lady to attend the White House Convening School Counseling task force in San Diego, California on November 17-18, 2014. The purpose of the event is to provide feedback to the Office of the First Lady in an effort to create and implement measurable action plans for improving school counseling preparation, programs, and practices with the goal of increasing college access for all students. Only three counselors from Georgia were selected to attend the event, and our very own Ms. Mingo is one of them!
Ebola K-12 Guidance Letter
The Georgia Department of Public Health requested our assistance in sharing with all school districts a guidance letter regarding the Ebola virus.

JCSS Recognized with Golden Radish Award
Jackson County Schools was recognized with the Golden Radish Award, a prestigious state-wide farm to school distinction which acknowledges the outstanding leadership of school representatives building comprehensive farm to school programs.
The school district was one of 30 honored at the state capitol for this extraordinary work by State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black, Public Health Commissioner Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, and Georgia Organics Board Chair Mandy Mahoney.
Jackson County Schools was recognized at the Gold level for their accomplishments during the last school year, which include:
• Locally grown food items were featured in school meals 32 times. There were one or two local items on the menu each month, as well as a Georgia Grown Menu Day every month.
• All 12 schools in the district have their own edible gardens which feature container gardens, raised beds, and greenhouses.
• Students participated in 20 hands-on food activities throughout the year, including South Jackson Elementary School’s cooking carts, which allow children to prepare in class what they harvested from the garden.
SJES Bus Changes for October 8, 2014
Effective Wednesday October 8, 2014 there will be some afternoon bus changes. The bus number for the purple bus will now be 97-1, and the driver will be Forrest Phillips. The bus number for the green bus will now be 06-4 and the driver will be Towana Wood. Students who previously rode the red bus will now ride the green or the purple bus. If your child previously rode the red bus, then you will receive a note in the Tuesday folder indicating which bus your child will now ride. Please anticipate later afternoon arrival times for a few days while the drivers adjust to their new routes. Thank you!
