Summer Reading 2015
The Jackson County Elementary and Middle Schools are teaming up with the Piedmont Regional Library System and encouraging all of our students to participate in our summer reading challenge! Research shows that many kids' reading skills decline during the summer because they often don't read as much as they do during the school year. Reading even a few books over the summer will help maintain the progress students have made this year.
Students: We are challenging you to read 40 books or 20 hours this summer. This is the same challenge that has been set by your local public library branch! This means that you can visit your local library this summer to check out some amazing books and to fill out a reading log with the same books that you are including for your school reading log.
Use the provided reading log to record the title and author of each book you read this summer. Your reading log was given to you on one of the last days of school. You can also download one from our summer reading website!
Completed reading logs are due Wednesday, August 12th. Students who read the designated number of books or complete their 20 hours of reading, will be able to participate in our super hero party in August!
There are many FREE eBooks that you can read online. myON Reader has given students in Georgia access to over 8,000 eBooks for the summer. You can find out more information about logging into this database on our summer reading website. Students can also listen to books using their South Jackson Tales2Go account.
We can't wait until we see you again in August when you'll be able to tell us all about your favorite books that you read this summer!
The BOE discussed the potential of a Tiered Transportation plan which would impact start and end times for students, as well as, transportation services configuration. In an effort to improve our transportation services, several plans were considered to: reduce student route times, eliminate elementary students from riding with middle and high school students, to create a consistent morning and afternoon driver for all students and to reduce the conflict between afternoon extra-curricular events and valuable instructional time. After several community meetings, stakeholder feedback and feasibility studies, the BOE accepted the superintendent's recommendation to keep existing transportation service model with a few changes for improvement:
- School Start and End Times
- Elementary 7:45 AM-2:20 PM
- Middle 8:00 AM-3:20 PM
- High 8:00 AM-3:10 PM
- Morning Transportation Service will remain the same with all students being picked up at the same time in the mornings and middle and high school students utilizing express routes.
- Afternoon routes will deliver elementary students between 2:30 and 3:30PM; middle and high school routes will be combined and deliver students between 3:30 and 4:45PM.
Thank You Lowe's!
The students and staff at South Jackson Elementary School in Georgia would like to say THANK YOU to Lowe's for the generous Toolbox for Education Grant. This money completely funded phase 1 of the SJES trail system. This money allowed several projects to be completed and included materials for a 30ft. bridge, information kiosk, signs, maps, and all tools needed for construction and maintenance. Phase 1 of our trail system is complete with a total 1.9 miles of trails. Phase 2 should be completed by the fall. Thanks to all the volunteers and students who have helped make this process such a success!
